About

Welcome to the University of Denver Women's Hockey Program!

At the University of Denver, our women's hockey program is dedicated to fostering a strong team culture and providing a comprehensive college experience for our players. We believe that being good people off the ice is just as important as our performance on the ice. In fact, the best way to be good on the ice is to be your best off the ice. Our goal is to create a supportive and competitive environment where players can develop both as people and as players.

What sets our program apart is that we are a student-run team, supported by our coaches who have their own experience in the professional world. This unique structure makes us unlike any other program in the country. As players, you will have the opportunity to take part in a leadership class on skates. You will be responsible for managing our five-figure budget, handling scheduling, administrative tasks with the league and school, fundraising, recruiting, and much more. These responsibilities provide invaluable skills that will set you up for success and give you a competitive edge when you graduate.

To make sure you have the skills for success when you graduate, we believe in the importance of a full and comprehensive college experience. While hockey is a significant part of our lives, we also encourage our players to be involved in other clubs and activities on campus. We support you in finding internships, pursuing challenging majors, and exploring your other interests. We believe that the more diverse and well-rounded you are, the better it reflects on our team. We take pride in our players' achievements both on and off the ice, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

At the University of Denver, we believe in providing our student-athletes with a well-rounded education that extends beyond the boundaries of our campus. As part of our commitment to offering a comprehensive college experience, we highly encourage our players to take advantage of our outstanding study abroad program. Studying abroad not only enriches your academic journey but also broadens your perspective, deepens your cultural understanding, and enhances your personal growth.

Our team consists of 28 talented players from 15 different states, plus a few from Canada, bringing a diverse range of skills and experiences to our ice. We practice and play our home games at the renowned Magness Arena and Joy Burns Arena, located right on our beautiful campus.

Under the guidance of our experienced coaching staff, led by Head Coach John Anderson, who has been with us for seven years, five as the head coach, and assisted by Marissa Oakley and Tyler Ballantyne, we are determined to build a nationally competitive program in the coming years. Our coaches bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise, both on and off the ice, to help our players reach their full potential as players, but more importantly, as people.

We compete in the Western Women's Collegiate Hockey League (WWCHL) of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Our regular opponents include universities such as the University of Colorado, Colorado State University, Air Force Academy, Grand Canyon University, Arizona State University, and the University of Utah. Additionally, we travel around the country to face teams like the University of Rhode Island, Michigan State, and many more. These challenging matchups allow us to test our skills against top-tier competition and continually improve as a team.

Joining the University of Denver Women's Hockey Program means becoming part of a tight-knit community that values teamwork, personal growth, and a passion for the sport. We are dedicated to helping you become the best version of yourself, both as an athlete and as an individual.

I almost did not join Denver Women's Ice Hockey (WIH) my freshman year, thinking I needed a break from hockey. Well luckily that was a silly phase and I came to my senses and joined the most delightfully goofy, somewhat chaotic, and obviously smelly, but lovely little family. I had an outstanding time competing in the league with my best friends. I have never laughed more or had more hugs than I did during my time with WIH.
